What’s up With The Jade Roller Craze

If you haven’t been briefed (or haven’t fallen into a black hole of Instagram explore page), jade rollers are having a thing.
First the crystal craze came in quietly via niche, organic and animal-friendly skin care lines (Herbivore and Kaesthetics Studio among many). The #Shelfie obsessed have acquired the perfect looking massagers in bulk and placed them neatly among serums, oils and over-priced candles with perfect lighting ‘just so’ on minimalist glass and golden trays.
Us beauty devotees followed in hopes of magical promises of radiant skin, wrinkle reduction and well, good vibes. The truth is, if you massage your face with any smooth rock it will help with lymphatic drainage and blood circulation. The so-called ‘healing properties’ come with the belief that crystals (rose quartz seems to be everybody’s favourite) contribute to one’s overall emotionalslash-energy state. This, of course is up for a discussion and what works best for you. Yet, there are other ancient practices that do involve crystals in a beauty routine. Take Gua Sha: an alternative therapy that involves scraping your skin in the upward motion with a massage tool that looks a lot like a flat version of any crystal.
After all, it is not a magic tool but can get you into a self-care routine and make your eyes less puffy if you keep your jade roller in the fridge (we tried, it feels great). Miranda Kerr, Alicia Keys and Victoria Beckham are reportedly fans so if we can look remotely as good as them, there is hope.
